MARINE SPORT FISHERY
(Decree No. 90-618 of July 11, 1990 & Prefectural Order No. 2002/1249 of August 19, 2002) FISHING & SCUBADIVING
For fishing or scubadiving it is mandatory to report to Affaires
Maritimes annually (with proof of civil liability insurance)
or be a member of an FESSA-affiliated diving club (permit obligatory).
Minimum age : 16. Only authorized equipment are catapult or snare
guns.
It is strictly prohibited to fish with air tanks, as well
as at night.
Simultaneous on-board possession of a gun and tank is strictly
prohibited, except by special permission granted on an ad
hoc basis upon justification of need to the appropriate officials
(consult Affaires Maritimes).
The products of maritime sport fishing may not be peddled,
displayed, or sold, and must be "for exclusive consumption
of the fisherman and his family."
It is prohibited under all circumstances to : - hook to, lift,
examine, or search the fishing vessels or implements of others, -
make a Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) and to engage in any type
of fishing activity within 1/2 nautical mile of a FAD.
Fishing and collecting prohibited :
. Lobsters - with a gun, at night, with a light source - gravid (carrying eggs) Lobsters should measure at least 21 cm for the spiny royal lobster
and 14 cm for the Brazilian lobster.
. Sea Urchins (white edible) - prohibited
all year (regulated for professionnals)..
. Turtles - permanent ban applicable to all categories, including sale,
purchase, and egg consumption
. Lambis (Conches) - all year, limited in Guadeloupe to 3 per yacht per day, 250 g meat per
animal, horn formed in Martinique (authorized 4 months for
professionals).
. Madrepore, sea fans, sponges, and marine plants
other than those washed up on the beach
It is also prohibited to :
come
within 200 m of commercial fishing boats or implements, within
50 m of swimmers, and 200 m of public beaches
take
marine animals from fishermen's implements or nets
use
a light source
keep
a harpooning implement loaded out of the water
FISHING AND YACHTING
Yachtsmen are authorized to use the following fishing implements
only :
. 2 trolling or
bottom (hand) lines rigged with a maximum of 12 fish hooks
. 1 ground line with a maximum of 30 fish hooks,
. 1 fish spear
(or gaff) and 1 scoop or landing net (salabard).
They are not authorized to use fishing nets or fish pots.
Quantities permitted : 3 fish per person per outing when trolling
for mackerel, tuna, dolphinfish, and snapper. (This limit
does not apply to authorized fishing tournaments). Beware of poisonous species (ciguatera).
